The meteor was spotted by dozens people as it passed over Johannesburg and Pretoria in Kauteng province on Saturday. The Johannesburg Planetarium subsequently appealed for any witnesses who managed to record the space rock's fall to come forward with the footage. Read more
"By law in this country any meteorite which hits the ground belongs to the state. So it will be given over to the universities to study its origins and its characteristics, after that it will become property of the state so somebody who finds this object will not be able top keep it" - Tim Cooper, Astronomical Society of South Africa.
The Johannesburg Planetarium has requested footage captured by members of the public.
"If footage from enough security cameras is available, it could possibly be used to work out where the meteor came from, how fast it was travelling, how high it was, and where it ended up" - astronomer Claire Flanagan.
