TMT Final EIS Process

The almost two-year-long TMT Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) process is nearing conclusion. The FEIS is in its final stage of internal approval. It will be sent to the Mauna Kea Management Board for approval in early April and then forwarded to Gov. Linda Lingle for review and approval.
Assuming Lingle approves it, a notice will be published in the Office of Environmental Quality Control's bulletin, which makes the FEIS' approval official. This starts a 60-day challenge period. It is during this period that an individual or group could go to court to challenge the FEIS.

China to participate in giant Hawaii telescope
Chinese astronomers have signed on to participate in the development of the world's largest telescope that will be built atop a Hawaii volcano, a group said Tuesday.
The Thirty Meter Telescope, the group spearheading the project, said the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has joined as an observer. It is the first step of a process expected to lead to the NAOC becoming a full partner and financial contributor.

The world's biggest telescope was decided Tuesday to be completed by 2018 in Hawaii.
The telescope's mirror, stretching almost 30.48 meters in diameter, will be so large that it should be able to gather light that will have spent 13 billion years travelling to earth.
This means astronomers looking into the powerful telescope will be able to see images of the first stars and galaxies forming -- some 400 million years after the Big Bang.

Thirty Meter Telescope Selects Mauna Kea
After careful evaluation and comparison between two outstanding candidate sites - Mauna Kea in Hawaii and Cerro Armazones in Chile - the board of directors of the TMT Observatory Corporation has selected Mauna Kea as the preferred site for the Thirty Meter Telescope. The TMT will be the most capable and advanced telescope ever constructed.
When completed in 2018, the TMT will enable astronomers to detect and study light from the earliest stars and galaxies, analyse the formation of planets around nearby stars, and test many of the fundamental laws of physics.
To achieve these outstanding results, the TMT will integrate the latest innovations in precision control, segmented mirror design, and adaptive optics to correct for the blurring effect of Earths atmosphere, enabling the TMT to study the Universe as clearly as if the telescope were in space. Building on the success of the twin Keck telescopes, the core technology of TMT will be a 30-meter primary mirror composed of 492 segments. This will give TMT nine times the collecting area of todays largest optical telescopes.

Thirty Meter Telescope releases draft EIS
The proposed $1.2 billion Thirty Meter Telescope, or TMT, has issued the following media release in regards to the long awaited draft Environmental Impact Statement for its possible future home atop Mauna Kea.

The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (Draft EIS) for the proposed $1.2 billion Thirty Meter Telescope Project (TMT) will appear Saturday, May 23 in the Office of Environmental Quality Controls (OEQC) Environmental Notice. The draft document details the environmental, community, economic, and cultural impacts of locating TMT on Maunakea.
The purpose of the Draft EIS is to present the existing environmental conditions, analyse the potential effects of the project, and identify ways to minimise potential adverse impacts. The Draft EIS also outlines the potential benefits of TMT to the local economy and community.
